- ClosureMineral King Road closed for the winter on October 28 and usually reopens the Wednesday before Memorial Day, so day 3 isn't possible until then.

- Mineral King Road closed for the winter on October 28 and usually reopens the Wednesday before Memorial Day, so day 3 isn't possible until then. Source
- The road to Cedar Grove closes for the winter on November 13, and the Cedar Grove lodge, market, grill and campgrounds are already closed. After that you can't drive the day 2 byway down to Cedar Grove. Source
- Hazard tree work causes weekday delays of up to 30 minutes on Generals Highway between Highway 180 and Giant Forest. Source
- Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect, with no wood or charcoal fires at campgrounds below 3,000 feet such as Potwisha, or below 6,000 feet in the backcountry. Source
How 3 days in Sequoia split up
Plan 3 days for Sequoia. Best season: May-Oct. Base: Three Rivers. Entry fee: $35/vehicle. Two days is enough to see the reason people come: the General Sherman Tree, Moro Rock and Crescent Meadow in the Giant Forest on day one, then the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway north through Grant Grove on day two. Both parks share one entrance fee and one road system, so this is really one trip with two names.

Giant Forest and Moro Rock
Fly into Fresno (FAT) and drive Highway 198 to Three Rivers, about 73 miles and 1 hour 45 minutes, then on to the Ash Mountain Entrance two miles up the road. From there the Generals Highway climbs 5,000 feet in 16 miles of switchbacks to the Giant Forest, a full hour, not the 25 minutes the mileage suggests; from Three Rivers itself it is about 23 miles and 1 hour 15 minutes door to door.

The Kings Canyon Scenic Byway
From the Giant Forest, Generals Highway continues north about 28 miles to Grant Grove Village, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes of more switchbacks. This is the Kings Canyon side, and the General Grant Tree is its equivalent of the Sherman tree: 267 feet tall, the second-largest tree on earth by volume, and formally the Nation's Christmas Tree. The loop trail to it is a paved third of a mile.

Mineral King, If You Have the Time
Mineral King is a different park experience: a narrow, unpaved-in-places road climbing out of Three Rivers to a subalpine valley at 7,800 feet, cut off from the rest of Sequoia National Park by mountains with no road across them. It is open late May through October, then closed for the winter. The drive from Three Rivers is about 30 miles, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes each way.

The road decides the pace
Generals Highway climbs 5,000 feet in 16 miles of switchbacks. Every drive time in this itinerary already accounts for that; do not trust a map app's straight-line estimate.
No entry reservation, real entrance fee
Entry is $20 to $35 per vehicle for 7 days and covers both parks. No timed-entry reservation has been required, but confirm on nps.gov before you go.
Two parks, one road system
Sequoia and Kings Canyon are administered together and connected only by Generals Highway. Treat them as one trip, not two separate visits.
Mineral King is its own park
No road crosses the mountains to it from the Giant Forest or Kings Canyon side. It is reached only from Three Rivers, and only in season.

Two days covers the trip most people mean: the Giant Forest and Moro Rock on day one, the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway as far as Grant Grove on day two. A third day adds Mineral King or pushes the byway all the way to Cedar Grove and Roads End. One day works too, but it fits only the Giant Forest.
Yes. Day one is the Giant Forest, General Sherman Tree, Moro Rock and Crescent Meadow. Day two drives Generals Highway to Grant Grove for the General Grant Tree. Going the full way to Cedar Grove and Roads End on day two turns it into a 10 to 11 hour day, so many people stop at Grant Grove instead.
Yes. The Congress Trail, the General Grant Tree loop and Crescent Meadow are all paved or near-paved and under two miles. Moro Rock is the one stop that is not for young kids or anyone uneasy with heights, since it is 350 open stairs up a granite dome.
About 1 hour 45 minutes to the Sequoia entrance at Three Rivers on Highway 198, or about 1 hour 15 minutes to the Kings Canyon entrance near Grant Grove on Highway 180. Fresno Yosemite International is the closest major airport to both.
No entry reservation has been required. Entry is $20 to $35 per vehicle for 7 days and covers Kings Canyon too. Book lodging in Three Rivers ahead for summer weekends, since rooms there are limited.
September and October: warm days, thin crowds, and the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway still open. Cedar Grove and Mineral King both close by early-to-mid November, and Generals Highway can need chains from late fall through spring.
