A Colorado and Utah road trip is really a trip about a transition. You start in alpine tundra above 12,000 feet, with marmots and snowfields in July, and four days later you are walking under sandstone fins in a desert that has not seen rain in a month. The drive between them is the point.

Denver to Estes Park
Pick the car up in Denver and drive 65 miles north-west to Estes Park, the town at Rocky Mountain's eastern gate. It is a short first day on purpose: you are going from 5,280 feet to 7,500, and tomorrow you go to 12,000.

Trail Ridge Road and the Continental Divide
Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in any US national park, topping out at 12,183 feet, and eleven of its miles run above 11,500. You spend most of the morning above treeline in alpine tundra, which is a landscape most people never see from a car.

Down to the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs
Today is the transition day, and it is a good drive rather than a dull one. From Grand Lake you follow the young Colorado River south-west through Kremmling and Hot Sulphur Springs, pick up I-70 at Silverthorne, and run west through Glenwood Canyon, which is one of the great pieces of American road engineering: a stacked interstate threaded through a 1,300-foot limestone gorge.

Colorado National Monument, the Park Nobody Stops At
An hour and a half west of Glenwood, just outside Grand Junction, the Colorado National Monument rises straight out of the valley in red sandstone. Rim Rock Drive runs 23 miles along the canyon edges with a view at every pullout, and on a summer weekday you will share it with almost nobody.

Arches, and the Reservation You No Longer Need
Here is the thing almost every article about Arches still gets wrong: the park announced in February 2026 that it is not requiring timed-entry reservations this year. You can drive in during operating hours with a valid entrance pass and no ticket at all.

Canyonlands, Island in the Sky
Canyonlands is three parks that cannot see each other, separated by the rivers that cut them. Island in the Sky is the district 40 minutes from Moab, and it is a mesa top 1,000 feet above everything else, with the Green River on one side and the Colorado on the other.

Moab Back to Denver, or Keep Going West
The loop closes with a long drive: Moab to Denver is about 355 miles and five and a half hours on US 191 and I-70, back through Glenwood Canyon and over Vail Pass. Leave early, because the last two hours are mountain interstate and the weather does what it likes.

One park needs a ticket, one does not
Rocky Mountain requires timed entry late May to mid-October. Arches does not in 2026, whatever the older articles say. Check both before you travel.
Trail Ridge is seasonal
Open to through travel from the last week of May to mid-October, weather permitting. Outside that the route runs on I-70 instead.
Altitude first, heat second
You go to 12,183 ft on day two and to desert heat on day five. They need opposite preparation and both catch people out.
Moab books out in shoulder season
April, May, September and October are the busy months. Midsummer is easier because it is 100°F, which is also the reason.
