Mesa Verde National Park in Winter: What Is Open and Which Tours Run
Mesa Verde is open year-round with no reservation needed to enter, but winter changes what you can actually do there. The ranger-led cliff dwelling tours stop entirely, so Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree House are viewed from overlooks, not entered. Wetherill Mesa closes for the season (open May 22 to October 21, 2026), along with Far View Lodge and Morefield Campground. The Mesa Top Loop Road, the museum and the visitor center all stay open. Is Mesa Verde Open in Winter?
Yes. Mesa Verde is open daily, year-round, and the National Park Service states plainly that no reservation is needed to enter at any time of year. What changes with the season is which facilities and tours are running, not whether the park is open. All winter activities depend on road, trail and weather conditions at this elevation (roughly 7,000 to 8,500 feet), so check current conditions before you drive up, and expect the park to update this seasonally each year.
What Closes in Winter
- Cliff dwelling tours. The ranger-led tours into Cliff Palace, Balcony House and Long House do not run in winter. You can still see Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree House from overlooks along the Mesa Top Loop Road and near the museum, but you cannot enter any of the dwellings.
- Wetherill Mesa. Closed for the season; it is open May 22 to October 21, 2026, and closed the rest of the year. This is the more remote of the park's two mesa areas.
- Far View Lodge. Closed for the winter.
- Morefield Campground. Closed for the winter; there is no overnight camping or lodging inside the park during this period.
- Most dining facilities. The only winter food service is the Spruce Tree Terrace Café, near the museum; check the concessioner's hours before you plan a meal around it.
What Stays Open
- Mesa Top Loop Road. Open daily 8am to sunset. This 6-mile drive has eleven stops, some with short paved trails to archaeological sites, and includes overlooks of Cliff Palace and Square Tower House.
- Spruce Tree House Overlook. Signs near the museum lead to the best viewpoint. The trail to the lower overlook is short but steep and often icy in winter; there is no entry into the dwelling itself.
- Mesa Verde Museum. Open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day, with the park film and exhibits, a warm stop on a cold day.
- Visitor and Research Center. Open daily except the same three holidays.
Self-Guided Winter Activities
Outside the ranger-led tour season, exploring the park is self-guided: driving the Mesa Top Loop, walking to the overlooks, and, conditions allowing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the park's winter trails. NPS recommends traction devices for hiking trails whenever snow or ice is present, which is common at this elevation from December through February.
Where to Stay in Winter
With Far View Lodge and Morefield Campground both closed, winter visitors stay outside the park, in Cortez or Mancos, both a short drive from the entrance on US-160, or in Durango, about 35 miles east.
