The best family vacations out west are the national park trips where the trails are short, the drives between stops are manageable and there is something for a six year old to do besides sit in the car: Utah's Mighty Five, the Olympic Peninsula, Rocky Mountain National Park, the Yosemite and Sequoia loop in California, and Yellowstone with Grand Teton. How these five were chosen
A good family trip out west is not the same as a good hiking trip out west. The trips here were picked because they share a few things that matter more with kids than with adults: most of the walking is on trails of a few miles or less, there is a visitor center or ranger program near the main stops, and the big views are reachable from a car or a short, easy path. Nothing on this list requires a permit hike, a scramble or a night in the backcountry.
They also cover different kinds of country, so you can pick by what your family wants to see: red rock and arches, rain forest and tide pools, alpine lakes and elk, waterfalls and giant sequoias, or geysers and bison.

Utah's Mighty Five: the big red rock trip
The Utah Mighty Five family road trip starts in Las Vegas and runs through Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands and Arches in 7 to 10 days. The family version keeps the hikes short: the Riverside Walk and Lower Emerald Pools in Zion, Queens Garden at Bryce, the Fruita orchards at Capitol Reef, Mesa Arch at Canyonlands and the Windows at Arches. In Zion, private cars cannot drive the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive during shuttle season, and the shuttle is free with no ticket needed, which kids tend to treat as a ride in itself.
Two rules to know for 2026. Arches dropped its timed entry system this year, so you can drive in without a reservation. The Fiery Furnace still needs a permit, and children under 5 are not allowed in it. Go in spring if you can; summer afternoons in southern Utah are hot for small children. Olympic Peninsula: the west coast family trip
If you want a west coast family trip rather than a desert one, the Olympic Peninsula family road trip is the easiest. It is a 7 day loop from Seattle through Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, Sol Duc Falls, the Hoh Rain Forest, Rialto and Ruby beaches and Lake Quinault. The Hall of Mosses in the Hoh is a 0.8 mile loop and the Spruce Nature Trail is 1.2 miles, both flat enough for young walkers. Time the coast day for a low tide so the tide pools are exposed.

Rocky Mountain National Park: the short one
At 4 days from Estes Park, the Rocky Mountain family itinerary is the best fit for a long weekend or for families flying into Denver. The days are built around Bear Lake and Nymph Lake, Alberta Falls, the Sprague Lake loop, Trail Ridge Road over the alpine tundra, and elk in Moraine Park.
This is the one park on the list that still needs a reservation in 2026. From May 22 to October 12, timed entry is required to enter between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Bear Lake Road corridor needs a separate Timed Entry+ reservation from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., through October 18. Monthly blocks open on the first of the previous month at 8 a.m. Mountain time, and 40 percent of each day's slots are released at 7 p.m. the evening before. Yosemite and Sequoia: waterfalls and the biggest trees
The California national parks family loop spends 10 days between Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, the Mariposa Grove and Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Kids get Lower Yosemite Fall and Bridalveil Fall, the free valley shuttle, Mirror Lake and a swim in the Merced, then the giant sequoias. The General Sherman Tree is the largest tree in the world by volume, and the trail down to it is half a mile.

Yellowstone and Grand Teton: geysers and wildlife
The Yellowstone and Grand Teton road trip covers Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the Teton Range in 7 days. It is the best trip on this list for seeing big animals, and it comes with the strictest safety rules. Yellowstone asks visitors to stay on boardwalks in thermal areas, keep children close and not let them run on the boardwalks. You must stay at least 100 yards from bears and wolves and 25 yards from all other animals, including bison and elk.
What the parks cost a family in 2026
- Annual pass. The America the Beautiful pass is $80 for US residents and covers entrance fees at every park above for the car and everyone in it.
- Fourth graders get in free. US 4th graders can get a free pass through the Every Kid Outdoors program. Check everykidoutdoors.gov for who it admits before you rely on it for the whole car.
- Nonresident surcharge. Visitors 16 and older who are not US residents pay an extra $100 at 11 parks, including Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon, unless they hold an annual pass. The nonresident annual pass is $250.
Which trip for which family
With toddlers, pick Olympic or Rocky Mountain: flat loops, cool weather and short days. With kids from about six to ten, the California loop and Yellowstone work well because the payoffs come quickly on easy paths. With older kids who can handle heat and a few longer days in the car, Utah's Mighty Five has the most variety. If you only have a long weekend, it is Rocky Mountain.
