The road climbs from desert floor to over 8,600 feet at Cloudcroft, a mountain town with switchbacks and lower speed limits, which is most of why the drive takes longer than the flat mileage suggests. Past Cloudcroft the highway drops through Mayhill and on toward Artesia, where you pick up US-285/62 south into Carlsbad, then US-62/180 out to the caverns entrance. Total distance is about 190 miles and, with the mountain section, about 3 hours 30 minutes without stops. Fuel up in Alamogordo or Cloudcroft; the stretch through the mountains and toward Artesia has long gaps between gas stations.
Routing Through Guadalupe Mountains Instead
An alternative that trades a bit of time for a national park stop: from Alamogordo, take US-70/US-54 toward El Paso and pick up US-62/180 northeast, which runs directly past Guadalupe Mountains National Park before continuing to Carlsbad. NPS lists Guadalupe Mountains as about 56 miles from Carlsbad, New Mexico on that highway, and it sits between El Paso (about 120 miles the other direction) and Carlsbad, so a stop here does not require backtracking. Pine Springs, the main visitor area, has short trails to Devil's Hall and the Pinery Butterfield stage ruins if you only have an hour or two.
Carlsbad Caverns: Book a Time Before You Arrive
Carlsbad Caverns strongly recommends a timed entry reservation, bookable through recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. The reservation only locks in your entry window; you still buy your entrance ticket at the visitor center when you arrive. The visitor center runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the elevator into the cavern operates 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and if you are hiking in through the natural entrance instead of taking the elevator, that route is also 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and you need to finish the descent by 3:30 p.m. Last ticket sales are 2:15 p.m. and last entry is 2:30 p.m., so arriving with only an hour of daylight left will not work. Plan to arrive by early afternoon at the latest.

- Day 1: White Sands. Sunset on the dunes, overnight in Alamogordo.
