Fall: The Sweet Spot (October to November)
Fall is arguably the single best window. Summer heat breaks, monsoon storms taper off, and the dunes stay warm enough for shorts but cool enough for a full day on the trails. The Alkali Flat Trail, a five-mile loop across the heart of the gypsum field, becomes genuinely pleasant rather than punishing. Crowds thin out after the summer family rush, and golden-hour light gets richer as the sun drops lower in the sky. Pack a light layer for the morning and evening, when temperatures fall quickly once the sun is down.
Winter: Cool, Quiet, and Clear (December to February)
Winter brings the fewest visitors and the crispest air. Daytime highs are mild, often in the 50s and 60s, while nights can drop near or below freezing. The payoff is solitude and crystal-clear skies. Occasional dustings of actual snow on white gypsum create surreal photos. Keep these winter realities in mind:
- Short days: Sunset comes early, so start hikes by early afternoon to finish in daylight.
- Cold mornings: Bring gloves and a warm layer for the drive in; the basin holds cold air overnight.

Spring: Wind and Wildflowers (March to May)
Spring warms up steadily and is the windiest season in the Tularosa Basin. March and April afternoons can bring sustained gusts that whip sand across the dunes, which is dramatic for photos but tough for picnics. Early spring still offers comfortable temperatures, and by May the heat begins building toward summer levels. Spring is also when you may catch hardy desert plants like soaptree yucca blooming at the edges of the dune field.
Summer: Hot Days, Spectacular Sunsets (June to September)
Summer is the hardest season for daytime activity. Highs regularly climb into the 90s and beyond, and the open dunes offer zero shade. If you visit in summer, flip your schedule: hike at sunrise, retreat midday, and return for the legendary White Sands sunset when the dunes turn pink and gold. Summer also brings the park's Full Moon Nights events and ranger-led programs, plus monsoon thunderstorms in July and August that build towering clouds over the basin. Always carry far more water than you think you need.
