Las Vegas to Joshua Tree National Park: Distance and Drive Time
The National Park Service lists Joshua Tree as about 215 miles southwest of Las Vegas. Only the first stretch, I-15 to Barstow, is fast interstate driving. Once you turn off onto CA-247 and CA-62, the speed limit drops and the road narrows, so the real drive time runs about 3 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes depending on the entrance, not counting stops. Add 30 to 45 minutes if you are heading past Yucca Valley into the park itself rather than stopping at the edge of town.
Route One: I-15 to the West Entrance
This is the route most people take. Head south on I-15 through Primm and Baker, then either continue to Barstow and cut east on I-40 and CA-247, or leave I-15 earlier near Yermo and pick up CA-247 (Old Woman Springs Road) south to Yucca Valley. From Yucca Valley, CA-62 runs east a few miles to the West Entrance near Joshua Tree Village. This route is almost entirely interstate and four-lane highway, so it is the faster and easier drive, especially with kids or in a car you do not want to push on rough pavement.
Route Two: Through Mojave National Preserve
The alternate route leaves I-15 at Baker and takes Kelbaker Road south through Mojave National Preserve to I-40, then continues on toward Twentynine Palms and the park's North Entrance (Oasis Visitor Center) instead of the west side. Kelbaker Road is paved and currently open, but the National Park Service warns it was built decades ago and has narrow shoulders, drop-offs and potholes in places, with a posted speed limit of 55 mph or less. It is a genuinely scenic desert drive through the preserve's Joshua tree forest and volcanic cinder cones, but check the current road conditions before you go, since washouts do close sections after storms.

Is This a Realistic Day Trip From Las Vegas?
It's possible but long. About 3 hours 30 minutes each way is close to 7 hours of driving round trip, which leaves a real day in the park only if you leave early and are willing to drive home in the dark. For most people, one night nearby makes the trip much better: it turns a long single-day push into an actual visit with time for a hike and the park's night sky, which is one of the better reasons to come out this way at all. Where to Sleep
Barstow, on the I-15 route, is the last real town with a full range of hotels before you turn off toward the park, about 1 hour 30 minutes from the West Entrance. Yucca Valley and the town of Joshua Tree sit right outside the West Entrance and have most of the area's lodging and restaurants. On the Mojave Preserve route, Twentynine Palms is the equivalent stop near the North Entrance, with lodging options and easy access into the park the next morning. Whichever route you take, fill up on gas before you leave the interstate. Stations thin out fast once you are on CA-247 or Kelbaker Road, and running low in the desert in summer is not a risk worth taking.
