The west entrance is the shorter drive by distance and puts you closest to the park's best known rock formations and the town of Joshua Tree, where most of the gear shops and cafes are. The Cottonwood entrance covers more miles, almost all on the interstate, which keeps the drive time close to the same, about an hour rather than 45 minutes. It is quieter and better if your plan starts in the park's south end, near the Cottonwood Spring Oasis, or if you are continuing east toward the Salton Sea or Arizona afterward.
Is a Day Trip From Palm Springs Realistic?
Yes, and it is one of the easier national park day trips anywhere near a major resort city. About 45 minutes in, a few hours inside the park, about 45 minutes back. Leave by mid-morning to have real time on the trails, and go earlier than that from roughly May through September, when the desert floor gets hot by midday. Winter and spring mornings are cool enough to hike any time of day.
What to Do With a Half Day
From the west entrance, Hidden Valley and Barker Dam are short, easy walks close to the entrance road, and both work well on a half day plan. Keys View, a short drive off the main road, looks out over the Coachella Valley toward the Salton Sea on a clear day, which is a fitting payoff for a trip that started in Palm Springs. If you have a full day rather than a half, add Skull Rock along the park boulevard and the short walk out to Arch Rock near White Tank. Both sit close to the road and need under 30 minutes each, which keeps a full day plan realistic even with the drive from Palm Springs on both ends.
Best Time to Make the Drive
October through April is the comfortable window for both the drive and the park itself. Joshua Tree sits at a higher, cooler elevation than Palm Springs, so the temperature drop as you climb out of the Coachella Valley on CA-62 is real and welcome in summer, but it is not enough of a drop to make a July afternoon hike a good idea. If you are visiting between May and September, go in the morning, and treat the middle of the day as driving and lunch time rather than trail time.
Fuel and Water
Fill the tank in Palm Springs or Yucca Valley before you go in; there is no gas station inside the park. Carry more water than feels necessary. There is no reliable water source at most trailheads, and the desert air pulls moisture out of you faster than it feels like it should, even on a mild day.
