Shenandoah National Park
Shenandoah is the obvious first pick and the easiest to do in two days. Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge, with four entrances: Front Royal in the north, Thornton Gap on US-211, Swift Run Gap on US-33 and Rockfish Gap in the south. The campgrounds, lodges, food and most trailheads sit right off the drive, which keeps the car time between stops short. Kids under 16 enter free.
For a family weekend, drive in at Front Royal or Thornton Gap and base near Big Meadows or Skyland. Dark Hollow Falls is the waterfall most families reach, though the return is steep. One practical note: there is only one gas station in the park, at Big Meadows Wayside around mile 51, and the park warns the pumps can be unreliable during power outages. Fill up before you enter. Harpers Ferry
Harpers Ferry sits where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, and the Appalachian Trail runs through it. Park at the visitor center lot, which has about 1,000 spaces, and ride the shuttle bus into Lower Town; the shuttle runs during normal business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The vehicle pass is $20 and covers three consecutive days. It pairs well with a night near Shenandoah, since the two are close.
Cunningham Falls State Park
Near Thurmont, Maryland, this is the best fit for young kids. The Lower Trail is half a mile, rated easy to moderate, and is the shortest way to the falls; the Cliff Trail is three quarters of a mile over rougher ground. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend you can swim in three designated areas of Hunting Creek Lake, with lifeguards from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The William Houck area has campsites and a handful of six-person mini cabins, which makes an easy first camping weekend.
Assateague Island
Assateague is the beach option, and the wild horses are the draw for kids. The $25 vehicle pass is good for 7 days and valid in both the Maryland and Virginia districts. The park is blunt about the horses: feeding or petting them harms both people and horses, and visitors are kicked, bitten and knocked down every year for getting too close. Blackwater Falls and Ohiopyle
For a three day weekend, head west. Blackwater Falls State Park near Davis, West Virginia, has a 57 foot waterfall stained amber by tannins, a boardwalk down to the main view, and the Gentle Trail above for easier access. It also has a lodge, cabins and a campground that runs April 28 to October 31. Ohiopyle State Park in Pennsylvania covers about 20,500 acres around the Youghiogheny River Gorge, which the state calls some of the best whitewater boating in the eastern United States. Book a family trip on the river with a licensed outfitter and check the minimum age before you go.
When to go
Spring and fall are the easiest seasons for all six. Summer is hot and humid at the low elevations around DC, which makes the lake at Cunningham Falls and the beach at Assateague the better summer picks, while the higher ground in West Virginia and along Skyline Drive stays a little cooler.
