Terlingua and Study Butte: Closest to the Park
Terlingua, a former mercury-mining town turned ghost-town-and-lodging strip, and Study Butte, the small settlement right at the west entrance junction, are effectively one lodging cluster. This is where most Big Bend visitors stay: casitas, small hotels, and a cluster of vacation rentals, all within a short drive of the west entrance. Stock up on gas and groceries here before you go in, since supplies inside the park are limited and pricier.
Lajitas: Further West, Quieter
Lajitas sits further west of Terlingua on FM 170, the River Road, right along the Rio Grande. It has a resort and golf course alongside more basic lodging, and it works as a base if you want distance from the Terlingua strip or plan to spend time on the river side of the park via the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive.
Marathon: Closest to the North Entrance
Marathon is a small town on US-90, about 70 miles from park headquarters and the closest town to the Persimmon Gap entrance in the north. It has the historic Gage Hotel and a handful of smaller lodging options, and it is the natural overnight stop if you are approaching Big Bend from Marfa, Alpine or points north rather than from the west.
Alpine and Marfa: A Night Before or After
Alpine, about 100 miles from park headquarters, is the largest town in the area and has more restaurant and grocery options than anything closer to the park. Marfa, about 126 miles and roughly 2.5 hours from Big Bend by the fastest route through Alpine and TX-118, is well known on its own for art installations and is worth a night if Big Bend is one leg of a longer West Texas trip rather than a dedicated park visit. Terlingua and Study Butte have the largest concentration of cabins and short-term rentals near the park, ranging from simple casitas to larger group houses, and they book out fast in the cooler months (November through April) when Big Bend is most comfortable to visit. Marathon and Alpine have fewer rental options but more traditional hotel rooms.
