What Is the Talimena Scenic Drive?

The Talimena Scenic Drive is a 54-mile National Scenic Byway that runs along the crest of the Ouachita Mountains, connecting Mena, Arkansas (State Highway 88) with Talihina, Oklahoma (State Highway 1). It is one of the only places in the region where you can drive a continuous mountain ridgeline, with long views over the Ouachita National Forest spreading out on both sides. The road follows the same east-west grain that makes this area special, the same ridges hikers walk on the Ouachita Trail.

The byway tops out near 2,600 feet on Rich Mountain, the second-highest peak in Arkansas, and the drive takes about two hours one-way if you stop at the overlooks. Build in extra time, because you will want to.

Starting from Mena: The Arkansas Side

Most travelers begin in Mena, a small mountain town that serves as the eastern gateway. Before you head up, fill the tank and grab snacks in town, because there are no services along the ridge. Just outside Mena you reach the Talimena State Park and the official byway entrance.

Key Arkansas stops as you climb west include:

  • Queen Wilhelmina State Park on top of Rich Mountain, with a lodge, restaurant, and short walking trails right off the road.
  • Rich Mountain Fire Tower, a short walk that delivers a 360-degree panorama of the forest.
  • Acorn Vista and the many pull-offs facing south toward the Cossatot country.

If you are curious about exploring this terrain on foot rather than from the car, the same ridges anchor our 7-day Ouachita Trail backpacking itinerary, which traverses Rich Mountain and the high country you can see from these overlooks.

Best Overlooks Along the Byway

The drive is essentially a string of overlooks, each numbered and signed. The standouts are the Lover's Leap vista, the panoramas near the Oklahoma line, and any pull-off facing north late in the day when the light rakes across the valleys. Pack a picnic and use one of the developed vista areas, several of which have tables and vault toilets.

Keep an eye out for black bears, white-tailed deer, and soaring turkey vultures riding the thermals off the ridge. Sunrise and sunset are the best windows for both wildlife and photography.

When to Drive: Fall Foliage and Beyond

The byway is most famous in autumn. Peak fall color in the Ouachitas typically lands in the last week of October into early November, when the oaks and hickories turn gold, copper, and red across mile after mile of ridge. Plan a weekday visit if you can, because color weekends draw crowds.

Other seasons have their own appeal:

  • Spring (April-May): dogwoods and redbuds bloom, and waterfalls along side trails run full.
  • Summer: green and quiet, though hazy; early mornings are coolest on the ridge.
  • Winter: stark long-distance views once the leaves drop, but watch for ice, which can close the road.

Trailheads and Hikes Off the Drive

The Talimena Drive is also the easiest way to reach several Ouachita Trail access points. The byway crosses or parallels the trail in spots, so you can park at a vista, walk a few miles of ridgeline, and turn around. Good leg-stretchers include the trails around Queen Wilhelmina and the Rich Mountain segments. Carry water, because the ridge tops are dry between springs.

For a deeper backcountry experience, the Flatside Wilderness and Forked Mountain lie east of the drive and are worth a separate trip.

Practical Tips for the Talimena Scenic Drive

A few things make the trip smoother:

  • There is no fee to drive the byway itself, though Queen Wilhelmina State Park has its own amenities.
  • Cell service is spotty on the ridge, so download maps before you go.
  • Watch for motorcycles, which love this road, especially on weekends.
  • The nearest lodging clusters in Mena, Arkansas and Talihina, Oklahoma; Queen Wilhelmina Lodge is the only mountaintop option and books out in fall.

Whether you treat it as a leisurely afternoon or the scenic bookend to a backpacking trip, the Talimena Scenic Drive is the single best introduction to the wild, underrated Ouachita Mountains of west-central Arkansas.
