How Many Days Do You Need in Yellowstone?
Three days is the minimum that does the park justice, five is the number most people should plan for, and seven lets you add Grand Teton properly. One day gets you Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic and nothing else, because the Grand Loop Road is 142 miles with a 45 mph limit and regular bison jams. Two days covers the lower loop badly. The park is bigger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined, and the driving is the constraint.

Why the driving dominates
People plan Yellowstone as though it were a single attraction. It is a road network. The Grand Loop is 142 miles of figure eight, the speed limit is 45 mph and lower in places, and a single bison on the road stops traffic for 20 minutes. West Yellowstone to Lamar Valley is 3 hours 30 minutes one way. Old Faithful to Mammoth is 2 hours. Any plan that assumes you can cross the park twice in a day is a plan that will not survive contact with the park.
Our advice by trip type
- First visit, flying in. Five days in the park, plus travel days. Fly into Bozeman.
- Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Seven days minimum, five in Yellowstone and two in the Tetons. Fly into one and out of the other.
- With young children. Four days, based in one place rather than moving, geysers and boardwalks rather than hikes.
- Wildlife focused. Four days based at Gardiner or Cooke City, and most of them start before sunrise.
- Winter. Three days, because oversnow travel is slow and expensive and you will not cover much.
