Yellowstone Itinerary: 5 Days, Done Properly

Yellowstone in 5 days, at a glance

Five days is the right length for a first Yellowstone trip. This plan enters at the West Entrance, works the lower loop over two days, moves to the canyon and Hayden Valley, gives Lamar Valley a proper dawn, and finishes across the north at Mammoth. Two nights near Old Faithful or West Yellowstone, then two or three at Canyon or Gardiner. It involves one base change and no day spent crossing the park twice.

Day 1. West Entrance to Old Faithful

In through West Yellowstone early, ideally before 8am in summer. Firehole Canyon Drive, then the Fountain Paint Pots, then Firehole Lake Drive for Great Fountain Geyser. Grand Prismatic in the middle of the day from the Fairy Falls overlook, a 1.2 mile walk, which is the only view of it worth having. Reach the Upper Geyser Basin by late afternoon and give it three hours. Old Faithful is the least interesting geyser there once you have walked out to Castle, Grand and Riverside.

Sleep: Old Faithful or West Yellowstone.

Day 2. Old Faithful area and the lake

Morning hike: Mystic Falls, 3.5 miles round trip from Biscuit Basin, or Lone Star Geyser, 5 miles round trip and flat. Afternoon over Craig Pass to West Thumb Geyser Basin, which sits on the shore of Yellowstone Lake and is the most underrated basin in the park. Then north along the lake to Fishing Bridge and up to Canyon for the evening.

Sleep: Canyon.

Day 3. Hayden Valley and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Be in Hayden Valley at first light. This is the second best wildlife ground in the park and the elk and bison are active before the traffic arrives. Back to Canyon for the falls: Artist Point on the south rim, then Lookout Point and Red Rock Point on the north. Afternoon hike up Mount Washburn, 6.4 miles round trip and 1,400 feet, for the best view in the park, or the shorter Cascade Lake trail if you want an easy day.

Sleep: Canyon.

Day 4. Lamar Valley

The early start that makes the trip. Leave Canyon before dawn over Dunraven Pass, or move base to Gardiner the night before. Lamar Valley at sunrise gives you bison herds, and wolves if you are lucky and have binoculars. Wolf watchers set up along the pullouts and are generally happy to let you look through a scope.

Mid morning, Tower Fall and the Roosevelt area. Afternoon at Mammoth Hot Springs, where the Upper and Lower Terraces take about two hours on foot.

Sleep: Gardiner or Mammoth.

Day 5. Norris and out

Norris Geyser Basin on the way south, which holds Steamboat, the tallest active geyser in the world, and the alien ground of Porcelain Basin. Gibbon Falls and Virginia Cascade on the way back to Madison. Out through the West Entrance, or north through Gardiner if you are driving to Bozeman.

If the Beartooth Highway is open and you have the time, leave through the Northeast Entrance instead and drive it to Red Lodge. It is the best road in the country.

Swaps

  • Wildlife first? Reverse it. Start at Gardiner, do Lamar on day 1 and 2, finish with the geysers.
  • Coming from Jackson? Reverse it entirely and enter at the South Entrance, doing West Thumb and the lake on day 1.
  • Shoulder season. Dunraven Pass and the South Entrance close first. Check before committing to a base change.

Free permit watch

You can't hike it if you can't get the permit.

The best hikes in America run on lotteries that open once a year and sell out in minutes. Every trail runs on its own calendar. Pick the ones you want and we do the watching.

How it works

  • An email the morning each window opens, never the day after.
  • A 14-day heads-up so you can line up your group and dates.
  • Win odds and a ranked backup plan for every trail you pick.

Didn't win? We keep watching. We check recreation.gov every day for The Enchantments, Half Dome and Angels Landing, and email you the moment a sold-out date frees up. Cancellations are the second chance most people never hear about.

I’ve requested to book a Chain Lakes Loop guide on ExplorOFF, and it was the best idea ever! I highly recommend going with their guided option since you get a real human connection on the trail and don’t have to worry about a thing. Yulia was great to talk to!
