Grand Canyon Family Road Trip: A Las Vegas Loop Through the South Rim and Zion

The drives, leg by leg

Times are without stops. With kids, add at least an hour to each leg for food, bathrooms and one proper leg stretch. Starting the long days early also keeps the worst of the desert heat for when you are already parked.

Where to stay at the South Rim

Tusayan sits 6 miles from the South Entrance, which makes it the closest base with hotels. Williams is 63 miles away and Flagstaff 81, both on I-40, with more rooms and more places to eat. For families, the short morning commute from Tusayan or the park itself is usually worth it, because sunrise and early morning are the best times at the rim with kids.

Two days at the South Rim with kids

The private vehicle fee is $35 and covers your car for 7 days. Once you are in, the free shuttle buses do most of the work. Four routes run in fall 2026: the Village route around the lodges, visitor center and Market Plaza, the Kaibab Rim route to Yavapai Geology Museum and Yaki Point, the Hikers' Express, and the Hermit Road route. Hermit Road itself is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30, 2026, so on that stretch the shuttle is the only way to reach the overlooks unless you walk or bike.

The Rim Trail is the family trail here: long, mostly level, partly paved, and connected to shuttle stops, so you can walk a stretch and ride back when legs give out. Much of the rim has no railing, so hold hands near the edge and keep kids off the rocks beyond the path. If you take older kids a short way down a canyon trail, remember that every step down is a step back up, in hotter air, at the end of the walk. Pick a turnaround time before you start and keep to it.

Leaving through Desert View

Heading for Zion, leave east on Desert View Drive rather than back through Tusayan. Desert View is 23 miles east of Grand Canyon Village and has a pay-at-the-pump gas station open 24 hours, the Desert View Market, and the Watchtower. Entry to the tower's upper floors is free but ticketed, 25 people at a time, and depends on staffing. Fill the tank here: the road east to Cameron and north to Kanab crosses long, empty country.

What about the North Rim?

The North Rim reopened for 2026 on May 15, but there is no overnight lodging on the North Rim this season, the park gas station closed for the season on September 19, and the road is closed to all vehicles from December 1 to May 14. Its campground reopened on June 1 with reservations on recreation.gov. For a family trip in 2026, the South Rim is the practical choice; if you want to see the North Rim, treat it as a day visit and check the park's North Rim status page first.

Zion and the drive home

From Zion it is about 160 miles and 2.5 hours back to Las Vegas on I-15. Keeping kids happy on the long legs

Two of the three drives on this loop run close to five hours before stops, which is the edge of what most kids tolerate. A few habits help. Break each long day at the halfway point with a real stop rather than a quick fuel top-up; Kanab works on the Zion leg, and Desert View works as the first stop leaving the canyon. Keep water and snacks within reach of the back seat so you are not stopping for every request. Download audiobooks, podcasts and maps before you leave, because signal is patchy across northern Arizona. And plan the days so the car time comes in the morning, when kids are fresh and the desert is coolest, leaving afternoons for the pool or a nap and evenings for the rim, when the light on the canyon walls is at its best.

A sample six day loop

• Day 1. Las Vegas to the South Rim. Arrive for sunset.
• Day 2. Rim Trail and the Village shuttle, rest in the afternoon heat, back out for evening light.
• Day 3. Hermit Road by shuttle in the morning, then Desert View Drive east.
• Day 4. Desert View to Zion through Cameron and Kanab.
• Day 5. Zion Canyon on the shuttle.
• Day 6. Zion to Las Vegas.

One thing to know before you book: Grand Canyon West, home of the glass Skywalk, is a separate site on Hualapai land, not the national park.
