Glacier National Park Vacation Packages: What They Include and What to Book Yourself
There is no single official Glacier National Park vacation package. What exists is two lodging concessioners, Xanterra and the Glacier Park Collection by Pursuit, plus separate tour operators for the Red Bus rides, boat tours and horseback rides. A "package" usually just means one of those companies bundling a room with one of its own tours. We will walk through what each piece is, then how we build a custom plan around them.
Who Actually Runs Glacier's Lodges
Two companies split the in-park lodging. Xanterra Parks & Resorts runs Lake McDonald Lodge, Many Glacier Hotel, Rising Sun Motor Inn, Swiftcurrent Motor Inn and the Village Inn Motel. The Glacier Park Collection, operated by Pursuit, runs Apgar Village Lodge and Motel Lake McDonald. A third operator, Belton Chalets, runs the two backcountry chalets, Sperry and Granite Park, which you hike in to rather than drive to. Booking any of these directly gets you the same room at the same price as booking through a bundled package; the package is usually just that room plus a tour added on.
The Red Bus and Guided Tours
Xanterra's historic Red Bus tours run scenic routes through the park in the park's original 1930s touring buses, driven by guides who narrate the whole way. Sun Tours runs a separate set of interpretive tours focused on Blackfeet history and culture. Boat tours run out of Many Glacier, Two Medicine, Rising Sun and Lake McDonald, each with a short guided walk built into the stop. Horseback rides are available out of Many Glacier, Lake McDonald and Apgar. None of these need to be bought as part of a lodging package; you can book any of them on their own.
What a Family Package Usually Covers
For families, a lodging package typically means a room at one of the family-friendly lodges (Lake McDonald Lodge and Many Glacier Hotel both have easy lake access and short trails from the front door) plus a half-day boat tour or Red Bus ride bundled in at a flat rate. It is worth pricing the room and the tour separately before booking a bundle, since the bundle is not always cheaper than booking each piece direct.
What a Honeymoon Package Usually Covers
Honeymoon-style packages generally add a specific room type, a lake or mountain view, and sometimes a private boat tour or dinner reservation on top of the standard lodging. Many Glacier Hotel and Lake McDonald Lodge are the two properties most often marketed this way, both because of the view and because both sit on a lake with an evening boat tour available.
