The short version
A snowcoach is a van or small bus running on tracks rather than wheels. It exists because of one fact about Yellowstone that surprises almost everybody: you cannot drive to Old Faithful in winter.
The park's interior roads close to wheeled vehicles in early November. They reopen around 15 December, but to oversnow travel only, and stay that way until mid-March when the plows start work. For those three months the complete list of ways into the park interior is: a snowcoach, a commercially guided snowmobile, a permit from the Non-Commercially Guided Snowmobile Access Program, or your own skis.
Which roads this applies to
All of them but one. The single road Yellowstone plows and keeps open to ordinary cars all winter runs from the North Entrance at Gardiner through Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and the Lamar Valley to the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City. If your winter plan only involves that corridor, you need no snowcoach at all.
Everything else, including Old Faithful, Canyon, Norris and the West, South and East entrances, is oversnow.
Where the routes run from
Snowcoaches operate out of three gateways:
- West Yellowstone, Montana. The busiest, and the shortest run to Old Faithful, up the Madison River from the West Entrance.
- Mammoth Hot Springs. Reached by car on the plowed north road, then oversnow south to Old Faithful or Canyon.
- Flagg Ranch, south entrance. The Grand Teton side, for trips coming up from Jackson.
What the day is like
Most trips are full days, in the region of eight hours door to door. The coach is warm between stops and the stops are cold, which is the opposite balance to a snowmobile day. Drivers stop for bison on the road, for the Firehole and the Madison, and for as long as the geyser basin needs.
At Old Faithful the boardwalks are packed snow, the Snow Lodge is open and serves lunch, and the Old Faithful Inn is shut for the season. The eruption draws perhaps thirty people instead of two thousand.
Snowcoach or snowmobile?
Choose on cold tolerance, not on how adventurous you feel in a warm room in October. A snowcoach is the sensible option for families, for anyone who does not want to drive a machine at twenty below, and for photographers who would rather look out of a window than through goggles. A guided snowmobile day costs more, reaches the same places, and is a great deal more fun if you are dressed for it.
Booking
Book the coach before you book the room. Beds in West Yellowstone are usually findable in February; a Saturday seat to Old Faithful often is not. Holiday weeks and February weekends sell out first.
