For a few weeks each autumn, Minnesota's North Shore becomes one of the best leaf-peeping destinations in the country. The sugar maples that carpet the Sawtooth Mountains above Lake Superior turn fiery red and orange, and from the ridgeline overlooks of the Superior Hiking Trail you can see that color spill all the way down to the deep blue water. This is a hiker's version of fall foliage, earned with a short climb and rewarded with a view few road-trippers ever get. Here is how to time it and where to go.
When Peak Color Hits
The North Shore does not change all at once. Color generally moves from the inland highlands down toward the lake and from north to south over about three weeks. As a rule of thumb:
- Mid to late September: the maple highlands around Tofte, Lutsen, and the Sawtooth ridges peak first, often the last week of September.
- Late September into early October: the inland forests and higher elevations near Grand Marais and the Gunflint Trail light up.
- Early to mid October: the birches and aspens closer to the shoreline and down toward Duluth hold on longest.
Because the maples turn first and fastest, the last week of September is the safest bet for the iconic red-over-blue-water photos.
Best Hikes for Fall Color
The single best fall hike is the Oberg Mountain Loop near Tofte. Its nine overlooks ring a maple-covered summit, and at peak the entire bowl below glows red. Right across the road, Leveaux Mountain offers a slightly longer, quieter loop with similar views. For a higher vantage, Carlton Peak above the Temperance River gives a 360-degree sweep of color and lake. Farther up the shore, the cliffs at Bean and Bear Lakes near Silver Bay frame two jewel-toned lakes in a ring of autumn forest.
Beat the Crowds
Fall is the busiest season on the North Shore, and the Oberg trailhead lot can overflow by mid-morning on peak weekends. To enjoy it:
- Go on a weekday if you possibly can, or arrive before 9 a.m. on weekends.
- Choose Leveaux over Oberg for a similar payoff with fewer people.
- Book lodging early. Rooms in Tofte, Lutsen, Silver Bay, and Grand Marais sell out months ahead for late September.
What to Pack
Autumn on Lake Superior is beautiful but moody. Mornings can start near freezing and afternoons can turn windy and cold at the exposed overlooks. Bring warm layers, a wind shell, gloves, and traction-friendly footwear for leaf-covered roots and rock. Daylight shortens quickly, so carry a headlamp and start hikes early.
Make a Weekend of It
Fall color is best enjoyed over several days so you can chase the changing leaves up and down the shore. Our 4-day Superior Hiking Trail itinerary strings together the top overlooks, including Oberg and Carlton Peak, with stops at the Temperance and Cascade waterfalls and recommendations for where to stay in Tofte and Grand Marais. Use it as your autumn game plan and you will catch peak color from the best vantage points on the North Shore.
