Which one should you stay in
- West Yellowstone for geysers. Old Faithful is 30 miles in. The most lodging, the most crowded gate, and the longest morning queue in July.
- Gardiner for wildlife and winter. The only gate open to cars year round, and the gateway to Mammoth and the Lamar Valley road.
- Cooke City for wolves. Tiny, at the quiet end of Lamar Valley, and reached only by the North Entrance road in winter or the Beartooth in summer.
- Cody for the east side and a real town. Rodeo, museums, and the least busy entrance.
- Jackson for combining Yellowstone with Grand Teton. Expensive, and cut off from Yellowstone by road from November to May.
- Island Park for cost. See our Island Park guide.
What counts as the closest city
People search for the closest city and get three different answers because the word city is doing a lot of work. If you mean the nearest settlement of any kind, it is West Yellowstone, which is at the entrance. If you mean somewhere with a hospital, a supermarket and an airport, it is Bozeman at 79 miles. If you mean the nearest place with more than 10,000 people, it is a tie between Jackson and Cody, both a little under an hour from their gates.
Towns worth a night that are not gateways
- Livingston, MT. An old railroad town at the top of Paradise Valley, 53 miles from Gardiner. Better food than the gateways and much better value.
- Emigrant, MT. Halfway down Paradise Valley, with hot spring resorts and views of Emigrant Peak.
- Ennis, MT. Fly fishing on the Madison, an hour and a half from the West Entrance.
- Dubois, WY. On the far side of Togwotee Pass from Jackson, and a fraction of Jackson prices.
- Ashton, ID. Quiet farm town near Mesa Falls, 45 minutes from West Yellowstone.
