Chicago to Yellowstone Road Trip: Two Routes
There are two natural ways to drive from Chicago to Yellowstone National Park, and they land you at opposite sides of the park. The northern route follows I-90 the whole way, through Wisconsin, Minnesota and South Dakota, past the Badlands and Black Hills, into Montana and the park's West Entrance at West Yellowstone. The southern route follows I-80 through Iowa and Nebraska, then cuts north through Wyoming past Cheyenne and up to Jackson Hole, entering through the South Entrance near Grand Teton National Park. Both run close to 1,450 miles one way. Neither is meaningfully shorter than the other; the choice comes down to whether you want the Badlands and Black Hills or Grand Teton and Jackson Hole along the way.
Route 1: I-90 via the Badlands and Black Hills
Chicago to Rapid City, South Dakota is about 917 miles, roughly 13 hours 30 minutes of driving on I-90, with the Badlands about an hour past the South Dakota line and the Black Hills right around Rapid City. From Rapid City, it is about 319 miles and 5 hours 15 minutes on to Billings, Montana, still on I-90, through the Bighorn country of northern Wyoming. The last leg, Billings to West Yellowstone at the park's West Entrance, is about 232 miles and 3 hours 45 minutes, dropping south through Bozeman. Total for this route: about 1,470 miles and 22 hours 30 minutes of driving, before you factor in stops.

Route 2: I-80 via Nebraska and Jackson Hole
Chicago to Lincoln, Nebraska is about 522 miles, roughly 8 hours 15 minutes, on I-80 the entire way. Lincoln to Cheyenne, Wyoming adds about 443 miles and 6 hours 30 minutes, still on I-80. From Cheyenne, it is about 434 miles and 6 hours 30 minutes north and west to Jackson, Wyoming, through Rawlins and Pinedale. The final stretch from Jackson through Grand Teton National Park to Yellowstone's South Entrance is short, roughly 45 miles and about an hour. Total for this route: about 1,445 miles and 22 hours 15 minutes of driving.

How Many Days You Need
- 2 days means one very long driving day of 12 to 14 hours, followed by a shorter second day. This works if you are trading scenery for time and plan to sleep once you cannot drive any further. It is doable but not comfortable.
- 3 days is the common pace: two overnight stops, three driving days of roughly 7 to 8 hours each. On Route 1, that is Chicago to Rapid City, Rapid City to Billings or Cody, then on into the park. On Route 2, Chicago to Lincoln, Lincoln to Cheyenne or Casper, then on to Jackson and the park.
- 4 days lets you actually stop and see the Badlands, Black Hills or Grand Teton along the way rather than just passing through, with three overnight stops and driving days closer to 5 to 6 hours each.
Where to Stop
On Route 1, Rapid City puts you within reach of the Badlands and Mount Rushmore, and it is worth a half day if your pace allows it; our Yellowstone to Mount Rushmore guide covers that stretch in more detail. On Route 2, Jackson is the natural last stop before the park, with Grand Teton National Park right between the town and Yellowstone's South Entrance, so budget extra time for that last short leg if you want to stop at any pullouts along the way.
Which Route to Pick
Pick Route 1 if the Badlands, Black Hills and Mount Rushmore interest you, or if you want to enter through Yellowstone's West Entrance and base out of West Yellowstone town. Pick Route 2 if you want Grand Teton National Park as part of the trip and plan to enter Yellowstone from the south. Both routes are almost entirely interstate or well maintained two lane highway, and neither requires four wheel drive or special preparation outside of normal winter driving conditions from October through April.
