New River Gorge in Winter, Fall and Early Spring: What Is Open

New River Gorge in November
November is the quiet stretch right after the rush. Bridge Day and the tail end of Gauley Season (the separate whitewater season on the nearby Gauley River, driven by scheduled dam releases) both wrap up by mid to late October, and by November the outfitters have closed for the year. What is left is empty overlooks, the last of the leaf color low in the gorge, and cold, clear hiking days. Expect daytime temperatures in the 40s and 50s Fahrenheit and the chance of an early snow at higher elevations.
New River Gorge in March
March is early spring in the gorge: still cold, still outside the commercial rafting season, but the river is often running higher from snowmelt and rain, which draws private boaters even though the outfitters have not opened for the year yet. Trails are usually clear of snow at gorge elevation, though mud is common after a thaw. It is a good month for a quiet hike or a climbing trip if you do not need rafting to be part of the visit.
New River Gorge in Fall
Fall is the park's busiest season. Leaf color typically peaks in the gorge in mid to late October, which overlaps with Gauley Season on the Gauley River (six weekends of scheduled releases, usually mid September into mid October) and with Bridge Day, held on the third Saturday of October. Bridge Day 2026 falls on October 17. Expect full parking lots at Canyon Rim and along Fayette Station Road that weekend, and book any rafting or lodging well ahead if your trip lands near it.
Camping and Roads in Winter
The park's campgrounds do not have winter-only closures the way the smaller visitor centers do, but amenities are reduced in the off season and some sites run first-come, first-served with no water hookup once the weather turns. Fayette Station Road, the narrow one-way loop under the bridge, stays open but can be slow or closed briefly after ice. Route 19 and the main approach roads to Canyon Rim are state highways plowed like any other West Virginia road, so a winter storm affects the drive in the same way it would anywhere else in the mountains, not the park specifically.
