Best Time to Visit Crater Lake: A Month-by-Month Guide

When to visit Crater Lake National Park for open roads, snow-free trails, and that famous blue water, broken down month by month.

8 min read

Crater Lake National Park sits at over 7,000 feet in Oregon's southern Cascade Range, which means snow rules the calendar far more than it does at most parks. The single biggest planning question is not where to go but when the roads and trails are actually open. This guide walks through the year month by month so you can match your trip to the experience you want.

The Short Answer: Late July Through September

If you want the full park experience, with the entire 33-mile Rim Drive open, snow off the trails, and the boat dock running, aim for late July through mid-September. This is the only stretch when everything works at once. The trade-off is that this is also peak season, so Rim Village and the Steel Visitor Center get busy by late morning. Our two-day Crater Lake Rim Trail itinerary is built around this window for exactly that reason.

Winter and Early Spring (November to May)

For roughly seven months of the year, Crater Lake is a deep-snow park. Annual snowfall averages around 40 feet, one of the heaviest in the United States. During this period:

  • The North Entrance and most of Rim Drive are closed and unplowed.
  • Only the road from the South Entrance up to Rim Village stays open, weather permitting.
  • Ranger-led snowshoe walks run on weekends from late December into March.
  • Garfield Peak, Watchman Peak, and Mount Scott trails are buried and unsafe without serious winter mountaineering skills.

Winter is stunning if you want the rim blanketed in white, but it is a snow trip, not a hiking trip.

June: The In-Between Month

June is the great gamble. Rim Drive is usually still being plowed and often does not fully open until late in the month or even early July. The lake is reliably blue and the crowds are thin, but expect snowbanks at the rim, muddy lower trails, and possible road closures. If your only goal is to see the caldera from Rim Village and you do not mind snow underfoot, June can be a quiet, beautiful time. Just do not count on the east side of Rim Drive or Cleetwood Cove being accessible.

July: The Door Swings Open

By mid-July most years, the full Rim Drive opens and the Cleetwood Cove Trail down to the water is usually clear. The Pinnacles Road and the trailheads for Mount Scott and Garfield Peak come into play. Wildflowers begin around the Castle Crest area. Early July can still hold snow patches on north-facing slopes, so the back half of July is the safer bet for a complete hiking trip.

August and Early September: The Sweet Spot

This is the reliable peak. Trails are dry, the boat tours to Wizard Island run on schedule, and overnight temperatures are pleasant for camping at Mazama Campground. Wildfire smoke is the main risk in late August and September across the Oregon Cascades, which can dim the famous blue and obscure views from Watchman Peak. Check air quality before you commit to a summit day, and have a flexible schedule if smoke rolls in.

Late September and October: Crisp and Quiet

Crowds drop sharply after Labor Day, and the light gets dramatic. Daytime hiking is excellent, but the first significant snowfall can arrive any time in October and close Rim Drive without much warning. The boat tours typically wrap up in mid-September. If you visit now, build in a backup plan and watch the forecast closely.

How to Choose Your Window

Match the month to your priority:

  • Full hiking trip with all trails open: late July through mid-September.
  • Fewest crowds with good weather: the second half of September.
  • Snowshoeing and winter scenery: January and February.
  • Quiet rim views and you accept snow: June.

Whatever you pick, confirm the Rim Drive status on the park's current conditions page before you drive up from Medford or Klamath Falls. Once you have your dates locked, the 2-day Rim Trail itinerary lays out exactly how to spend them on Garfield Peak, Watchman Peak, and Mount Scott.
