Big Sky to Yellowstone: Drive Time, Route and Whether to Stay There
Big Sky, Montana is 50 miles from the West Entrance on US-191, a drive of about an hour. Old Faithful is 80 miles and roughly 2 hours. The North Entrance at Gardiner is the long way round at 120 miles and about 2 hours 30 minutes, because there is no direct road east across the mountains. US-191 clips the northwest corner of the park on the way, which costs nothing and has no services.
The drive down the Gallatin
US-191 follows the Gallatin River south from Big Sky through a canyon that was the stand in for the Blackfoot in A River Runs Through It. It is 50 miles to West Yellowstone and the road is open all year. Between mile 18 and mile 38 the highway passes through Yellowstone National Park itself, a corner with no entrance station and no fee, so you cross the boundary twice without stopping. There is no fuel between Big Sky and West Yellowstone.
Allow an hour in summer. Bighorn sheep work the rock faces near the Squaw Creek area in spring, and the canyon narrows are slow and icy from November through March.

| Grand Prismatic | 75 | 1 hour 45 min |
| Old Faithful | 80 | 2 hours |

| Lamar Valley | 170 | 3 hours 30 min |
Is Big Sky a good base for Yellowstone?
It is a good base for the west side and a poor one for wildlife. The geyser basins are within a comfortable morning. Lamar Valley, where the wolves and most of the bison are, is three and a half hours each way, which is not a day trip anyone enjoys. If wildlife is the point of the trip, stay at Gardiner or Cooke City instead.
What Big Sky adds is everything that is not Yellowstone: Big Sky Resort runs a summer lift, there is whitewater on the Gallatin from May to July, and Ousel Falls is a 1.6 mile round trip from town. In winter it is a ski resort first and a park gateway second.
