Is WFR Required for Guides?
There's no single law. It depends on your permit and your employer, and many employers treat it as the baseline.
- Denali: "All guides must, at a minimum, maintain a valid Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification" and a current CPR card on guided mountaineering trips.
- Grand Teton: "each guide must be currently certified in standard first aid and CPR," so WFR exceeds the park rule there.
- AMGA: its rock, alpine and ski guide programs all require a current approved WFR. See how to become a mountain guide.
- NOLS instructors: "at least a current WFR certification and CPR certification are required."
- Outward Bound: overnight instructors need a WFA or WFR.
Even where your permit only asks for first aid, many employers and insurers prefer a WFR for multi-day trips. Permit rules by land type are in how to start a tour company.
Is WFR Standardized?
Not by any government. The Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative was set up in 2010 to write consensus scope-of-practice documents and "de facto standards" for WFA and WFR courses, and some providers say they meet them. Even the expiry varies, from two years at NOLS to three at most others. If an employer or permit names a provider or hour count, follow that.

How to Pick a Course
- Check what your permit, employer or AMGA program accepts, including minimum hours.
- Choose in-person if you learn by doing, hybrid if you can't take 9 days off.
- Compare the full cost: tuition, travel, and lodging if it isn't included.
- Look at the expiry. A 3-year card means fewer recerts.
- Book early for spring. Courses before guiding season fill first.
