A Denver Itinerary For People Who Came for the Mountains

Denver is a base camp that happens to have a city attached, and the trip should reflect that.

Three days from the Front Range city out into the peaks: Red Rocks and Mount Falcon, the Boulder Flatirons, and a full day in Rocky Mountain National Park. Including the timed entry permit that catches people out.

How 3 days in Denver split up

Nobody flies to Denver for Denver. A useful Denver itinerary gets you out of the grid and into the Front Range fast, and the good news is that the mountains start about twenty minutes from downtown. Red Rocks is closer to the city than most of its suburbs.

Start with day one

Not the order you want? Drag a stop, or use the arrows beside it. Stops move between days too.

  1. Arrive from DEN is ~40 min from downtown · Drive

DEN sits well out on the plains, about forty minutes from downtown Denver. Pick up a car here: everything worth doing on this trip is west of the city and none of it is reachable without one.

  2. Red Rocks and the Trading Post Trail
Red Rocks and the Trading Post Trail1.4 mi loop · free · Hike

Free, open daily outside show hours, and much more than the amphitheatre everyone photographs. The Trading Post Trail is a 1.4 mile loop weaving through the sandstone fins, and most visitors never leave the seating bowl to walk it.

  3. Mount Falcon Park
Mount Falcon ParkFoothills trails · free · mtn

Above Morrison, with the ruins of a burned mansion and a long view east over the plains. The west trailhead near Indian Hills puts you close to the viewpoints; the east trailhead is a much longer climb.

  4. Night in DenverThree nights, one base · lodge

One base for the whole trip. Golden is closer to the foothills and about $15 a night dearer; Estes Park only makes sense if you want a dawn start in the national park.

Not the order you want? Drag a stop, or use the arrows beside it. Stops move between days too.

  1. Drive Denver to Boulder
Drive Denver to Boulder~45 min north west · Drive

Forty-five minutes up US 36, and the Flatirons are visible for most of it. Boulder sits at 5,430 feet, so barely higher than Denver, but the trails climb fast from there.

  2. Chautauqua Park and the Flatirons
Chautauqua Park and the Flatirons~1,400 ft of climbing · mtn

The trailhead sits in a meadow directly beneath the Flatirons. The loop up to Bluebell and around the First and Second Flatiron climbs roughly 1,400 feet and is the best half day of hiking within an hour of Denver. Paid parking fills by 8am at summer weekends.

  3. Pearl Street, Boulder
Pearl Street, BoulderPedestrian downtown · tree

Four blocks of car-free downtown, and the obvious place to eat after coming down off the slabs before the drive back to Denver.

  4. Second night in DenverNo repacking · lodge

Back to the same room. Boulder is an easy day trip and staying there is not worth the move.

Not the order you want? Drag a stop, or use the arrows beside it. Stops move between days too.

  1. Drive to Estes Park~1 hr 45 from Denver · Drive

The gateway town, at 7,500 feet. Leave Denver early: your timed entry permit is a two hour window and traffic into Estes backs up on summer mornings.

  2. Beaver Meadows entrance, permit required
Beaver Meadows entrance, permit requiredTimed entry 5am to 6pm · Viewpoint

This is where the permit gets checked. Timed entry is required from 5am to 6pm between 22 May and 18 October 2026, booked on Recreation.gov as a two hour arrival window. Before 5am or after 6pm you can enter without one.

  3. Bear Lake and the lake chain
Bear Lake and the lake chainBear, Nymph, Dream, Emerald · Hike

Four lakes on one trail, climbing gently from Bear Lake up to Emerald. It is the most popular corridor in the park for good reason. The lot fills before 7am in summer and the Glacier Basin park and ride shuttle is the reliable way in.

  4. Trail Ridge Road
Trail Ridge RoadAbove 12,000 ft · car

The highest paved through road in any US national park, topping out above 12,000 feet on open tundra. Usually open from late May into October. There is no shelter up there, so turn back if weather is building.

  5. Back to Denver, or fly home~2 hr 15 to DEN · Drive

Estes Park to the airport is a little over two hours. If you are flying out the same evening, skip Trail Ridge Road and leave the park by mid afternoon.

Read this first

What actually decides a Denver trip, and it is not the city.

Altitude is the real variable

Denver is a mile up and the park is over two. Arriving from sea level and hiking hard on day one is how people spend day two in a hotel room. The plan above is gentle first on purpose.

The permit is the whole park day

Rocky Mountain timed entry runs 5am to 6pm from 22 May to 18 October 2026. Outside those hours you can drive in without one, which is why a 4:30am start is a genuine strategy.

Storms arrive on a schedule

From July into August the Front Range builds thunderstorms most afternoons. Everything above treeline should be finished by early afternoon.

The mountains are closer than you think

Red Rocks is 20 minutes from downtown and Boulder is 45. You do not need to move hotels to do any of this.

Free permit watch

You can't hike it if you can't get the permit.

The best hikes in America run on lotteries that open once a year and sell out in minutes. Every trail runs on its own calendar. Pick the ones you want and we do the watching.

29 trails watched daily

How it works

  • An email the morning each window opens, never the day after.
  • A 14-day heads-up so you can line up your group and dates.
  • Win odds and a ranked backup plan for every trail you pick.

Didn't win? We keep watching. We check recreation.gov every day for The Enchantments, Half Dome and Angels Landing, and email you the moment a sold-out date frees up. Cancellations are the second chance most people never hear about.
