Climbing Kilimanjaro The Machame Route in Seven Days
A walk, at nineteen thousand feet
The highest free-standing mountain on earth, walked from rainforest to glacier in seven days. No ropes, no technical climbing, just altitude and the discipline to go slowly enough to beat it.

The Machame route, Machame Gate to Mweka Gate
Plan and book your 7 days in Kilimanjaro, one step at a time
How 7 days in Kilimanjaro split up
Kilimanjaro is a walk, not a climb. There is no rope, no ice axe and no technical ground on the Machame route. What there is, is altitude: you finish at 5,895 m, higher than any point in Europe or North America, and you get there in under a week.

Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Registration at Machame Gate at 1,640 m, then five or six hours climbing through dense montane rainforest. It is humid, often raining, and the mud is legendary. Colobus monkeys in the canopy if you are lucky.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Out of the forest and onto the moorland: giant heather, lobelia and the strange senecio trees that only grow here. A steep rocky start, then the ground opens out onto the Shira Plateau.
Not the order you want? Drag a stop, or use the arrows beside it. Stops move between days too.
- Shira Camp
3,750 m · night 2 · lodgeAn old caldera floor, cold and open, with the best stars of the week.

Lava Tower and down to Barranco
The most important day of the climb and the one that looks pointless on paper. You climb to Lava Tower at 4,630 m, eat lunch there, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960 m, finishing lower than you started the afternoon.
Not the order you want? Drag a stop, or use the arrows beside it. Stops move between days too.

The Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp
The morning starts with the Barranco Wall, a 257 m scramble that looks impossible from the camp below and turns out to be a walk with a few hand-on-rock moves. The Kissing Rock section is the famous bit. No ropes, no exposure worth worrying about.

Karanga to Barafu Base Camp
A short, steep, dusty walk up to Barafu at 4,673 m, on an exposed ridge with no shelter and no water. You arrive early afternoon, eat, and go to bed around seven.
Not the order you want? Drag a stop, or use the arrows beside it. Stops move between days too.
- Barafu Camp

Summit night, Uhuru Peak, and down to Mweka
You leave around midnight in a line of headtorches, and climb switchbacks in the dark and the cold for six or seven hours. It is often minus twenty with wind. Stella Point at 5,756 m comes with the sunrise, and then it is another 45 minutes along the crater rim.

Mweka Camp down to Mweka Gate
Three or four hours back down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate at 1,640 m, where you sign out and collect your summit certificate. Green, warm and loud with birds after a week above the treeline.

What actually gets you to the top
Take seven days, not six
The six-day Machame skips the Karanga night and is the main reason people fail. One extra day above 3,000 m raises summit odds substantially. It is the cheapest insurance on this trip.
Pole pole, genuinely
Walk slower than feels natural, from day one. Fitness does not protect you from altitude; pacing and hydration do. People who overtake on day two are often the ones turning back on day six.
Choose the operator on wages
Ask what porters are paid, how many are on the team and whether the operator partners with KPAP. Bargain-basement quotes are subsidised by the crew carrying your kit.
Drink four litres a day
Dehydration and altitude sickness look identical and compound each other. Four litres daily, more on summit night, and insulated bottles so it does not freeze.
Talk about your symptoms
Headache, nausea and breathlessness are all common and usually fine. Hiding them is what turns manageable into dangerous. Your guide checks oxygen saturation daily for a reason.
Two dry seasons
January to early March and June to October. The long rains from late March to May make the forest days miserable and the summit far less likely to be clear.
Kilimanjaro questions
Everything you'll actually want to know before a Kilimanjaro trip.
Two dry windows: January to early March, and June to October. January and February are warmer with clearer summits and slightly fewer people. July to September is the busiest and driest stretch. Avoid the long rains from late March through May, when the forest days are miserable and summit views are unlikely, and the short rains in November.
We'll find the cheapest way to do this trip.

How it works
- An email the morning each window opens, never the day after.
- A 14-day heads-up so you can line up your group and dates.
- Win odds and a ranked backup plan for every trail you pick.
Didn't win? We keep watching. We check recreation.gov every day for The Enchantments, Half Dome and Angels Landing, and email you the moment a sold-out date frees up. Cancellations are the second chance most people never hear about.
