It Is a Road Race, Not a Mountain Race
The name misleads almost everybody who searches for it. The Mt. Sneffels Half Marathon does not go up Mount Sneffels. It does not go near the summit, the Lavender Col, or Yankee Boy Basin. It is a point to point road race down the Uncompahgre River valley, run on Ouray County roads, with the peak sitting off to the west as the scenery rather than the objective.
If you came looking for a race that climbs a 14er, this is not it. If you came looking for a fast, scenic, high altitude half with a mountain skyline the whole way, this is very much it.
The Course
The half marathon starts at Felin Park in Ouray and finishes at Ridgway Athletic Park, on Frontier Field, in Ridgway. The route runs roughly 99 percent on dirt county roads. From the start it crosses the river onto County Road 17, also signed as Oak Road, and follows it past Black Lake. Near the old townsite of Portland it turns onto Suzanne Lane and Marys Road, then picks up County Road 23 heading north along the river before rejoining 17 for the last few miles into the finish.
The 10K starts and finishes at Ridgway Athletic Park. The kids fun run stays on the soccer field area west of the pavilion.
Elevation: Net Downhill, Still Thin Air
The half starts near 7,700 feet and finishes around 7,000 feet. That is a net drop of about 700 feet over 13.1 miles, which makes it a genuinely quick course by mountain standards.
Do not let the downhill profile fool you into thinking it is easy. Seven thousand feet is still altitude. If you live at sea level, your half marathon pace here will not be your half marathon pace at home, and the last few miles are where that shows up. The other thing a net downhill does is beat up your quads, so train on descents rather than only on flats.
Date, Field Size and Entry
The race is held on a Saturday in mid to late August, with the morning running from about 7 AM to noon. The 2027 edition is scheduled for August 21.
Entry is limited to the first 500 registrants across the event, so it is not a race you can decide to run the week before. Register early.
One detail that catches people out: the races are cupless. There are no paper cups at the aid stations. You are expected to carry your own container, whether that is a handheld bottle, a soft flask or a collapsible cup.
A Note on the Name
Older race listings and running databases still refer to this as the Mount Sneffels Marathon, and the event's original web address used that name. The current event offers a half marathon, a 10K and a kids fun run. If you are searching for a full marathon here, that is why you keep finding half marathon pages.
Making a Weekend of It
Ouray and Ridgway are eleven miles apart, and both are worth the trip on their own. Ouray sits in a box canyon with hot springs at the edge of town, which is close to ideal for the afternoon after a race. Ridgway is more open, sitting where the valley widens, with the Sneffels Range filling the view south.
Racing at altitude and climbing at altitude are different problems, but they share a solution: arrive early. If you are combining the race with any time high in the San Juans, give yourself a day or two in the valley first.
Mt. Sneffels Half Marathon: Ouray to Ridgway FAQs
No. It is a road race on Ouray County dirt roads between Ouray and Ridgway, down the Uncompahgre River valley. The peak is the view, not the course. Nothing on the route requires any climbing.
It is net downhill, dropping from about 7,700 feet at the start in Ouray to about 7,000 feet at the finish in Ridgway, so it is fast for a mountain half. The altitude is still real, and the descent is hard on your quads if you have only trained on flat ground.
On a Saturday in mid to late August, running from roughly 7 AM to noon. The 2027 race is scheduled for August 21.
Entry is limited to the first 500 registrants across all the distances, so it can fill well ahead of race day. Register early rather than planning to sign up in the final weeks.
A half marathon, a 10K and a kids fun run. Older listings still call the event the Mount Sneffels Marathon, but a full marathon is not part of the current lineup.
The races are cupless, so aid stations do not hand out paper cups. Carry your own container, such as a handheld bottle, a soft flask or a collapsible cup.
