A San Diego Itinerary Built Around the Coast, Not the Queue

Day 1 of 3

Torrey Pines, La Jolla and the Sunset Cliffs

Start at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. It is a rare stand of Torrey pines on a crumbling sandstone bluff, and the loop of Razor Point and Beach Trail gives you the whole thing in about two miles. Parking is demand priced, roughly $15 on a weekday and $25 at weekends, and the lot fills early.

   San Diego International sits almost inside the city, which is unusual and useful: you can land, pick up a car and be at the coast in under half an hour. Everything in this plan is within 30 miles of the terminal.

   A rare stand of Torrey pines on a sandstone bluff above the Pacific. The Razor Point and Beach Trail loop is about two miles and gives you the badlands, the cliff edge and a way down to the sand. Parking is demand priced and the lot fills by mid-morning at weekends.

   La Jolla Cove and the Coast WalkSea lions, clear water · Viewpoint

   The Cove is a small sandstone bay with sea lions hauled out on the rocks and some of the clearest water on the California coast. The Coast Walk runs north from here along the cliff top. Parking is street only and competitive.

   Sunset Cliffs Natural ParkFree · go 40 min before sunset · Viewpoint

   Free, unfenced in most places, and the best sunset in the county. Park on Ladera Street and walk south along the cliff top. The sandstone is undercut and genuinely unstable, so stay behind the fences where they exist.

Day 2 of 3

Point Loma, the tide pools and Balboa Park

Check the tide chart the night before, because the Cabrillo tide pools only work at a low tide and everything else about this day bends around that. Cabrillo National Monument costs $15 per vehicle as of January 2026, valid seven days, and that also buys you the Bayside Trail and the old lighthouse.

   The tip of Point Loma, with the old lighthouse, the harbour view and the best tide pools in the city. Entry rose to $15 per vehicle on 1 January 2026 and is valid for seven days. An America the Beautiful pass covers it.

   The single most time-sensitive stop in this plan. At a low tide, and especially a negative one, the rocky shelf opens up into anemones, urchins, crabs and the occasional octopus. At a high tide there is nothing to see at all.

   A two mile out and back down the bay side of Point Loma through coastal sage scrub, with the harbour and the naval base below. Included in the Cabrillo entry fee.

   Bigger than Central Park and free to walk. The museums cost money but the gardens, the Botanical Building and the canyon trails below the main promenade do not, and the canyons are where you lose the crowds.

A sunrise on Cowles Mountain, then Mission Bay

One real climb, and it is short. Cowles Mountain in Mission Trails Regional Park is the highest point inside the city limits, and it is about 1.5 miles and 950 feet to the top. Do it at sunrise: the trail is exposed, it bakes by mid-morning, and the light over the city is the whole point.

   The highest point inside San Diego city limits, and a straightforward 1.5 mile climb of about 950 feet. There is no shade on any of it, which is why locals do it at first light. The view runs from the ocean to the desert mountains.

   A man-made bay with a paved path all the way round it, and the flattest afternoon available after a sunrise climb. Kayaks, paddleboards and bikes all rent by the hour on the water.

   Mission Bay is about fifteen minutes from the terminal, which makes the last day of this trip unusually relaxed.
