How 2 days in Hidden Lake split up
Hidden Lake Lookout sits on a rock summit at about 6,900 feet above a lake that is the colour of ink. It is 8 miles round trip with 3,800 feet of gain, and almost all of the climb is stacked into the second half, so the trail that starts as a pleasant walk through brush finishes as switchbacks on scree.

Start at the Wilderness Information Center in Marblemount, and start early. This is the only part of the day you do not control. A share of overnight permits are issued in person on the day, so the queue at opening is the queue that matters. Ask for a zone near Hidden Lake and have a second choice ready, because if it is gone it is gone.

~1 hr · rough narrow spur · DriveEast out of Marblemount on Cascade River Road, then the Forest Road 1540 spur to the Hidden Lake Creek trailhead. Narrow, potholed and brushy enough to scratch paint. Not technical, just slow.
- Climb to the saddle
4 mi · 3,800 ft · brush then scree · HikeGentle through brush and avalanche runout, then relentlessly up. The final switchbacks are open scree with no shade. The saddle is where the lake appears, 700 feet below and completely still.
- Camp at the lookout
First come · free · no water · lodgeThe lookout is free, unreservable and usually occupied. The flat stony ground below the summit block is the realistic answer. Carry your water up, pitch out of the wind, and put the bear canister a hundred feet away.
Sunset, a Night on the Ridge & the Walk Out
The reason to carry a pack up here rather than day-hike it is the two hours either side of dark. The ridge looks west, so the sun goes down behind range after range of the Cascades and Mount Baker sits on the horizon with the light behind it. Then the alpenglow arrives and everything turns the wrong colours for about fifteen minutes.

The reason to carry a pack up · ViewpointThe ridge faces west. The sun drops behind range after range with Mount Baker on the skyline, and the alpenglow lands about twenty minutes after you think it is over. Stay out for it.
- Descend to the trailhead
4 mi · knees, not lungs · HikeDown the scree while it is still cool, then the long gentle runout through the brush. Poles make a real difference on the top half.
- Back to Marblemount
~1 hr · food and coffee · DriveThe same rough spur in reverse, then town. If you are moving by seven you are eating a second breakfast before the day-hikers have parked.

The permit is in person
Overnight in the North Cascades backcountry needs a wilderness permit, and a share are held for walk-ups at the Marblemount Wilderness Information Center. Go at opening, on the day, with a second zone in mind.
The road eats cars
Forest Road 1540 is narrow, potholed and brushy. High clearance is not required but is much happier. Fold your mirrors and take it slowly.
Carry your water up
There is no water at the saddle or the lookout. Fill at the last stream on the climb and carry enough for dinner, breakfast and the walk down.
The lookout is a bonus
First come, free, and often occupied. Carry a tent and treat a night inside as luck rather than a plan.
The gain is back-loaded
3,800 feet in 4 miles, and the steep half is the second half, on open scree with no shade. Start earlier than you think you need to.
